FAIR | As casualties in Gaza mount, most TV news outlets have paid scant attention to the growing calls for a ceasefire.

In October, the IMF and World Bank gathered in Morocco for their annual joint meeting – their first such summit on African soil since 1973. In the decades since, the IMF and World Bank have imposed their failed debt-austerity agenda on much of the Global South. Few people today expect the IMF and World Bank to solve global problems. That is because, across the world, from Pakistan to Sri Lanka to Suriname, people know that these institutions are the authors of pain.

Faced with Israel’s collective punishment of Gaza, European leaders have offered unqualified support. Their disinterest in defending international law shows there’s no such thing as “a rules-based order” — just imperial powers, and their chosen allies.

A giant coalition of over 50 pan-Canadian labor, civil society, peace, and justice organizations have signed a joint statement demanding that the federal government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau call for an immediate ceasefire of all hostilities in Gaza.

The U.S. government, he explains, is willing to “try out a progressive government in Guatemala as long as it is obedient to U.S. interests.” That government now gains U.S. favor by accepting an indigenous mobilization that serves to “hide the emergence of the pluri-national, anti-neoliberal, or anti-imperialist social subjects that do exist in Guatemala.” Radical indigenous movements, such as the ones active in Peru and especially Bolivia, are to be squelched.
