The US anti-war movement fondly remembers the former government employee who contributed to the end of the US invasion of Vietnam
In Québec, lease transfers are “one of the only tools that tenants have for ensuring affordable rents” amidst a worsening housing crisis. However, the governing centre-right CAQ has tabled, Bill 31, which would eliminate lease transfers from the tenant playbook. Housing expert Gavin Armitage-Ackerman calls this legislation “class warfare.”
Ever since the Haitian people successfully overthrew slavery and colonialism in 1804, they have been subjected to interventions and policies by the French and U.S. governments–from devastating “debt” collection to brutal military occupation, from coups to neocolonial puppet dictatorships–designed to destroy their existence as sovereign people, as an independent nation. There is extensive evidence to prove the genocidal nature of these historical interventions, including the brutality of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Haiti between 1915-1934. The subsequent U.S.-backed dictatorship of “Papa Doc” Duvalier who ruled Haiti from 1957–1971. Tens of thousands of Haitians were tortured, murdered, and disappeared while even more perished through the structural genocide of impoverishment, malnutrition, death by preventable disease, and extreme exploitation.
The meteoric rise of SYRIZA in Greece in 2012 and the resounding double victory of 2015 (one in January and the second in September, after the great after the great compromise of July 2015) seems to have ended with the crushing defeat in the May 21 elections.
It is important not only for the USA to contribute much more for UXO clearance but also to pay huge compensation to Laos because the bombings and the CIA land war in Laos were completely illegal. The USA war against Laos was for the USA just an extension of its war with Vietnam; it had no legal justification and was shockingly unethical in all aspects. The only reason, if it can be called a reason, the USA had was that it was committed to curbing any communist force, and isn’t it an irony that after all that happened, the tiny country of Laos with its 8 million people is today more committed to communism than China is!
The ultra-conservative American televangelist Pat Robertson has died. As poisonous as his influence on American politics was, Robertson’s legacy in Africa is even more cynical.
