The international community’s rejection of Canada’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council is not a surprise. In the below introduction to Yves Engler’s new book, House of Mirrors: Justin Trudeau’s Foreign Policy, the author details how Liberal foreign policy has largely mimicked that of Stephen Harper, who lost a bid for a Security Council seat in 2010.
"Nuisance abatement laws have been used similarly nationwide, including at Cup Foods. These laws are part of what is known as “third-party policing,” which transforms immigrant businesses into nodes of surveillance, expands the power of the police and the courts, and drives wedges between vulnerable communities."
The European Human Rights Court has ruled in favor of a group of activists who were convicted by French courts for their support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The activists campaigned at French supermarkets in 2009 and 2010, raising awareness of the oppression of Palestinians and calling for a boycott of Israeli products. The European Human Rights Court ruled their conviction violated the free speech of the activists, and ordered France to pay them damages.
"Bryn Male, who retired from British Transport Police in 2014, identified as man carried over shoulder of Patrick Hutchinson ... "Creating jobs must be the priority for countries where millions have been thrown into unemployment by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns. The IEA’s analysis shows that targeting green jobs – such as retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient, putting up solar panels and constructing wind farms – is more effective than pouring money into the high-carbon economy."
Our team at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research developed a ten-point agenda for a post-COVID-19 world. Last week, I presented this agenda at the High-Level Conference on the Post-Pandemic Economy, organised by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA). The rest of this newsletter is taken up with the agenda, which we hope will be adopted by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) who might take it forward for discussion to the UN General Assembly. We are certainly in need of a New International Economic Order.
